RIVERSIDE, Calif. - A balanced scoring attack and a strong first half propelled the twelfth-ranked University of California San Diego men’s water polo team to a 12-8 win over Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) rival No. 17 California Baptist, Thursday evening in Riverside.

With the win, UC San Diego remains undefeated in conference play, improving to a perfect 4-0 record and stays on top of the WWPA standings with a two-game lead. Overall, UCSD moves to 7-10. CBU fell to 16-8 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

Junior Kevin Asplund, senior Arman Momdzhyan and freshman Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt each earned a hat trick, scoring three goals apiece. Junior Alessandro Valania notched two goals while sophomores Skyler Munatones and Noah Carniglia each added one. Turnbow-Lindenstadt also had an assist and two steals.

In goal, junior Sam Thompson had 10 saves to go along with five steals.

"We are super stoked to win on the road and very pleased to have a great start and establish some separation," said head coach Denny Harper. "It always helps when you have three players have hat tricks and a solid game by Sam in goal".

UCSD held a 33-26 advantage in shots and finished 2-of-9 on powerplays while the Lancers went 1-of-8.

The Tritons used a strong first half, outscoring CBU 8-3, as the deciding factor to seal their fourth conference win. Momdzhyan opened-up the game with two goals while Turnbow-Lindenstadt added a goal and an assist during the first frame.

Valania scored early in the second quarter before CBU’s Tanner Shore had back-to-back goals to make it a 6-3 game. However, Munatones and Carnigla each scored to give UCSD a five-goal lead at the half.

Both teams tallied five goals in an evenly-matched second half, however, the Tritons first half advantage propelled them to the five-goal victory. Turnbow-Lindenstadt and Asplund led the way scoring two times apiece while the Lancers’ Kyle Christian and Jonny Lotero tallied two goals each during the final half of play.

Christian and Shore each had a hat trick for CBU with three goals each. In goal, Matt Miller made 12 saves.

UCSD returns to the pool for a non-conference game at Long Beach State Wednesday, October 18 at 6:00 p.m.
