Tritons Move Into Tie for First Place in CCAA, Retain Reis Cup with Win vs. Cal Poly Pomona

LA JOLLA, Calif. - Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) led all players with 19 points to pace the University of California San Diego women's volleyball team to a 3-1 conference win against Cal Poly Pomona Friday night at RIMAC Arena. Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match were 18-25, 30-28, 25-20, and 25-15.

With its fifth-consecutive victory, UC San Diego improved to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the CCAA, tied with Sonoma State for first place. In addition, the win kept the Reis Cup in La Jolla. Established in 2013, the annual event is named in honor of former Triton volleyball player Karen Reis, who passed away tragically in 2012. UCSD is now 4-1 in Reis Cup matches and has won the last two.

Colla, who was named the Reis Cup MVP, finished with 17 kills, a service ace, and a solo block to account for her 19 points. The senior outside hitter posted a .342 attack percentage with just four errors in 38 attempts and collected her team-leading 12th double-double of the season by adding 16 digs.

Sophomore outside Jessyca Beksa hit a season-high .464 with 14 kills and only a single error in 28 swings. Sophomore middle blocker Jessica Rieble and junior middle Micah Hammond each had nine kills. Rieble, ranked 15th nationally in blocks per set, added four block assists to her season total. Junior outside hitter Molly Dalziel had eight kills and 15 digs, while sophomore setter Marie Paris notched a double-double with 47 assists and 17 digs. Sophomore libero Alyson Penrose led the Tritons defensively with 18 digs.

UC San Diego hit .228 on the night, putting down 59 kills with 21 errors in 167 attack attempts. For the 11th time in 17 matches, UCSD out-blocked its opponent, holding a 6-4 advantage. The Tritons rank 15th in the country in blocks per set.

Cal Poly Pomona fell to 8-10 overall and 4-6 in the CCAA. Alexandra Gresham had a team-best 15 kills for the Broncos, while Alexandria Bollier amassed a match-high 22 digs.

After a sluggish start during which they hit .083 in the first set, the Tritons improved their attack to .278 in the second stanza. They dropped down to .162 in set three before hitting .350 in the final frame, the highest by either team in the match. UC San Diego led wire-to-wire in sets three and four.

The pivotal second set saw the Tritons down 28-27 and facing a 2-0 deficit in the match. However, they rallied for three unanswered points on a Colla kill, a Bronco attack error, and a Rieble ace to get the come-from-behind win and even the contest at 1-1.

The Tritons swept the regular season series against the Broncos, also winning in Pomona on Sept. 30.

UC San Diego hosts Cal State San Bernardino (11-7, 7-3) Saturday at 7 p.m. The Coyotes lost in five sets at Cal State San Marcos Friday night. UCSD's lone conference loss of the year came against CSUSB on Sept. 29 in San Bernardino.

UC San Diego students are admitted free to all regular season home matches.
