LONG BEACH, Calif. - Eighth-ranked Long Beach State scored with 2:25 left in the second sudden-death period, fourth overtime, as the 13th-ranked University of California San Diego men’s water polo team fell, 11-10, in a non-conference matchup Wednesday night in Long Beach.

UC San Diego drops to 7-11 overall. The 49ers improve to 10-9 on the season.

Freshman Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt put the Tritons ahead by one goal, 9-8, with 1:32 remaining in regulation before LBSU’s Nemanja Bakic made a five-meter penalty shot 20 seconds later, sending the game into overtime.

The 49ers scored with 1:39 on the clock in the first overtime to take a 10-9 lead. During the second overtime period, both teams struggled to find the back of the net and it looked like LBSU would take the win. However, junior Alessandro Valania netted a powerplay goal at the buzzer to keep the Tritons alive and send the game into sudden-death.

The first sudden-death period was scoreless and the game remained tied at 10 headed into fourth overtime. LBSU’s Austin Stewart notched the game-winning goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity.

Turnbow-Lindenstadt had a game-high four goals, completing his eighth hat trick of the season. Senior Arman Momdzhyan notched two goals while freshman Jack Ranj, junior Kevin Asplund, sophomore Cooper Milton and Valania each added one.

Junior Sam Thompson made 12 saves in goal.

The Tritons had a strong first quarter, notching four goals to take a 4-2 lead. The 49ers defense stepped up in the second quarter, shutting out UCSD. LBSU added two goals in the second frame and the game was tied at four heading into halftime.

The 49ers held an 8-7 lead after the third frame before Ranj used and early fourth quarter goal to knot the game at eight. Turnbow-Lindenstadt had three of the Tritons' five goals during the second half.

Austin Stewart and Austin Stevenson tallied three goals apiece for LBSU while Thomas Freeman made 11 saves in goal.

UC San Diego returns home to La Jolla to host Air Force in a WWPA contest Friday, October 20 at 6 p.m. at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
