No. 7 UC San Diego Sees Record CCAA Win Streak Ended at 23 With 1-1 Draw at Cal State East Bay
Release: Thursday 10/26/2017
by UCSD

HAYWARD, Calif. - The seventh-ranked University of California San Diego women's soccer team saw its record 23-game California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) win streak ended after a 1-1 draw with Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Stadium on Thursday night.

With the result, UCSD moved to 12-2-2 overall and a still-undefeated 9-0-1 in the CCAA. Last-place Cal State East Bay is 4-11-2 overall and 1-8-2 in league play. The Tritons were looking for a second straight perfect conference slate, having gone 12-0 a year ago. They had already locked up a second successive CCAA regular-season championship, and the top seed for next week's CCAA Tournament, which UCSD will host. The Tritons are still an unbeaten 9-0-2 over their last 11, having now played three straight double-overtime contests, all on the road, and gone 1-0-2 in those.

There was not a lot of action in the early going, as UCSD waited until the 21st minute to gain credit for its first shot, that one blocked off the foot of senior All-American Katie O'Laughlin (Carlsbad/Pacific Ridge School). East Bay had the game's first attempt at the 5:50 mark, with nothing else registering in between.

Just two minutes and 17 seconds into the second half, the Tritons found their breakthrough. Natalie Widmer sent a pass that fellow true freshman Caitlin McCarthy (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) dummied through for O'Laughlin, who shot over the East Bay goalie and into the back of the net for her sixth goal of 2017, pulling her even for the team lead with strike partner Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS). Both Widmer and McCarthy were credited with assists. For Widmer, it was her very first collegiate point, and for McCarthy, a third helper.

Cal State East Bay pulled even again in the 56th minute on Abby Buitrago's fourth of her freshman campaign. Her shot from distance carried from left to right and beat redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Angelica Ramos. Aulani Fernandez got the assist. It was just the third score conceded by the Tritons in CCAA play this year.

There were no further goals. Ramos finished with five saves. Cheyanne Foster had eight stops for the Pioneers. UCSD held a final shot advantage of 20-10.

UC San Diego will remain in the Bay Area and move south to Seaside to take on Cal State Monterey Bay in its regular-season finale this Saturday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m.

Triton Notes: UCSD leads the all-time series, 9-1-1 ... The Tritons are still an unbeaten 23-0-1 over their last 24 CCAA games and 29-0-2 in their last 31 games against CCAA opposition in all competitions (CCAA Tournament and non-conference), since a 1-0 loss at Sonoma State on Oct. 18, 2015 ... UCSD has held a 72-8 scoring advantage in those 31 games, and trailed in just two ... The Tritons have allowed just three goals during their current 11-game unbeaten streak, the first one an own goal at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 22 ... UCSD head coach Brian McManus remains four wins shy of 500 for his legendary career ... The Tritons reached the 20-shot mark for the seventh time in 2017 ... Katie O'Laughlin's goal was the fourth of her career against East Bay, having scored once in each meeting.
