THE LAST TIME OUT
UC San Diego and San Diego State met last season in exhibition play at Viejas Arena with the Aztecs taking a 76-63 victory. UCSD out-scored SDSU, 33-23, in the second half, but couldn't overcome its 23-point deficit (53-30) at the half. The Tritons shot 47.3% to the Aztecs' 45.3% and led 30-28 in rebounding. However, UCSD turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 28 points for SDSU. The Aztecs were 21-32 from the free throw line and the Tritons were 5-6. Michael Shoemaker netted a team-high 16 points for the Tritons, while Christian Oshita added nine and Chris Hansen and Adam Klie grabbed five rebounds apiece. For the Aztecs, Montaque Gill-Caesar led all players with 18 points and Trey Kell totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and four steals.

TRITONS COMING OFF HISTORIC SEASON
UC San Diego's 2016-17 season was the finest in program history as the Tritons set records for overall wins (27) as well as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victories (17). The team won its first-ever CCAA regular season title and added a second banner by winning the league's tournament for a second time. For the second-straight season, top-seeded UCSD advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game, serving as the regional host for the first time. A 12-game win streak was also a team first and the Tritons were ranked as high as 11th in the country, finishing their campaign at No. 19. Senior guard Adam Klie was named the CCAA Player of the Year and Eric Olen was tabbed the CCAA Coach of the Year. In addition to Klie, sophomore center Chris Hansen was an All-CCAA First Team selection, while sophomore swingman Christian Oshita was named to the league's second team.
