LA JOLLA, Calif. - University of California San Diego women's soccer senior Brie Diaz was named Thursday to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 8 First Team for the NCAA Division II.

Diaz is a first-time Academic All-District selection. She is one of 12 student-athletes and four defenders on the first team, and will advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® ballot, to be selected next month.

Diaz (Temecula/Great Oak HS) started each of third-ranked UC San Diego's first 17 games at center back after moving there from a holding central midfield position. She missed the last two matches after leaving the regular-season finale with an injury. In fact, Diaz was UCSD's only field player who had remained on the pitch for every minute, before exiting in the 67th minute at Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 28. She has anchored a Triton defense that ranks 27th in Division II, fourth in the West Region and second in the CCAA with a 0.611 team goals-against average.

Diaz is a fifth-year senior in her third go-around as a Triton after transferring from UC Riverside ahead of the 2015 campaign. She aided UCSD to back-to-back California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season titles and three successive CCAA Tournament crowns over her three seasons in the program. Diaz was chosen to the All-CCAA Second Team late last week, after picking up All-CCAA honorable mention as a midfielder in her first year as a Triton in 2015.

A biochemistry and cell biology major, Diaz maintains a 3.69 grade-point average.

UC San Diego begins its NCAA Championship run in the second round this Sunday, Nov. 12, at home after earning a first-round bye. The Tritons, the West Region's top seed, will take on the winner between fourth-seeded Chico State and 16th-ranked No. 5 seed Concordia of Portland, Ore. Kickoff on Sunday at Triton Soccer Stadium is set for 2 p.m. That first-round affair is on Friday, Nov. 10, also at 2 p.m. in La Jolla.

Now 15-2-2 overall, UC San Diego has gone unbeaten over its last 14 matches, at 12-0-2. The Tritons are a perfect 11-0 at home in 2017.

The CoSIDA Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
