Four Tritons Score in Double Figures as UCSD Gets 78-64 Win Over California Baptist
Release: Saturday 11/11/2017

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women’s basketball team earned its second-straight win of the season with a 78-64 victory over California Baptist Saturday afternoon in Riverside.

UC San Diego improves to 2-0 to start the 2017-18 season. CBU drops to 1-1 overall.

“It was great to put together two wins to open up a very tough non-conference schedule,” said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. “I was really pleased with our teams’ ability to improve from one game to the next on a quick turn-around. That was evident in the job Marcella Hughes did on California Baptist’s point guard”.

The Tritons had four players score in double digits, led by sophomore Mikayla Williams who tied a career-high with 18 points to go along with 17 rebounds, also a career-best. Junior Kayla Sato pitched in 13 points while senior Taylor Tanita and sophomore Sydney Sharp had 12 apiece. Tanita dished out 10 assists and tallied a block and a steal.

“We got tremendous contributions from Sharp. Williams was a huge presence for us. Obviously its great to have Tanita gaining confidence,” said VanDerveer.

CBU’s Tori Mitchell put up a game-high 21 points while Blaysen Varnadoe grabbed 11 rebounds.

UCSD shot 38.4 percent (28-73) from the field, including 36 percent (9-25) from behind the arc. The Tritons held the Lancers to 26.3 percent (5-19) from the three-point line and 41.9 percent (26-62) overall.

In the first quarter, UCSD led by five, 17-12 with 2:21 left before CBU scored nine unanswered points to take a 21-17 lead.

The Tritons opened the second quarter scoring 14 points to retake the lead, 33-26. Senior Paige Song made two three-pointers while Williams had back-to-back jumpers in the stretch. A three-pointer from junior Marcella Hughes gave UCSD its largest lead of the half, 39-28.

A three from Tanita gave the Tritons an 18-point lead with 3:17 remaining in the third quarter. CBU went on a six-point run to make it a 61-49 game heading into the final frame.

Sharp made three consecutive three-pointers in the fourth frame to seal the victory for UCSD.

“We are starting to take pride in having a defensive mentality and recognize it fuels our offense,” said VanDerveer.

UC San Diego will return to the court Friday, Nov. 17 for a game against Western Washington as part of the SoCal/GNAC Classic at Azusa Pacific.
