Tritons Downed in Straight Sets at Cal State LA

LOS ANGELES - Suffering its fourth-consecutive loss to conclude the regular season, the University of California women's volleyball team was swept at Cal State LA in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) action Saturday at University Gym. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-22, and 25-22.

UC San Diego finishes its regular season slate at 16-9 overall and 10-7 in the CCAA. The Tritons, having secured a berth prior to this weekend's two losses, will compete in the CCAA Championship Tournament, held Nov. 16-18 at San Francisco State.

The Golden Eagles owned sizable advantages in several statistical categories, including kills (53-31), hitting percentage (.210-.133), assist percentage (.410-.268), digs (55-40), and side out percentage (61-52).

As they have done much of the season, the Tritons excelled at the net, finishing with 10 team blocks.

"Our blocking was better tonight, but offensively we're not where we need to be," said UCSD head coach Ricci Luyties. "We have two practice days before the conference tournament, so we need to figure some things out quickly."

Individually, UCSD was led by Rebecca Seaberry's season-high 9.5 points. The senior finished with eight kills, three blocks, a dig, and an assist. She hit a blistering .471 with no hitting errors in 17 attempts. Seaberry produced back-to-back solid outings as she had seven kills and hit .400 in Friday's loss at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Senior Amanda Colla (Carlsbad/San Dieguito Academy) had seven kills, while junior Micah Hammond and sophomore Jessica Rieble each totaled four blocks. Sophomore Alyson Penrose amassed 14 digs.

For Cal State LA, Karla Santos posted a match-high 15 kills while adding 11 digs for a double-double. Sifa Faaiu also registered a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs and Daisia Labrie had 11 kills to go along with four blocks. Jeshmarie Suarez led all players with 16 digs.

The Golden Eagles improved to 14-11 overall and 10-7 in the CCAA, clinching the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament.

UC San Diego will be the third seed from the CCAA's South Division and play Cal State East Bay, the North Division's No. 2 seed, in a league tourney quarterfinal on Nov. 16 at 5 p.m.

Now in its third year, the CCAA tournament format mirrors the NCAA Division II Women's Regional Tournament: an eight-team single-elimination beginning with four quarterfinal matches on Thursday. The winners advance to Friday's semifinals, and the victors face off for the title on Saturday.

An automatic NCAA Championship berth awaits the tournament winner.

Tickets to the action-packed weekend are available one hour prior to the first match of each day at San Francisco State's Main Gym box office. The general admission seats are $10 for adults and $5 for seniors, children 12 and under and students with an ID. For complete tournament information, visit the tournament page.
