Balanced Attack Nets UC San Diego its First Win, 70-68 at Point Loma

SAN DIEGO - Five players scored in double figures as the University of California San Diego men's basketball team defeated Point Loma, 70-68, Tuesday night at Golden Gymnasium.

With its first victory of the young season, UC San Diego moves to 1-2 overall. Point Loma drops to 2-3.

Christian Bayne and Christian Oshita each had 14 points for the Tritons, while Michael Shoemaker totaled 13, Eric Patton had 12, and Anthony Ballestero contributed 10. Oshita added six rebounds and four assists to his totals. Shoemaker grabbed six boards and Mikey Howell finished with four assists. Bayne was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.

UCSD turned the ball over just seven times and had 18 assists on 25 made baskets. The Tritons shot 46.3 percent (25-54) for the game, which included a 55.2 percent clip in the first half.

UC San Diego got out to an 18-6 lead in the opening half, backed by five points apiece for Ballestero and Shoemaker. The lead was short-lived as the Sea Lions made three-consecutive treys, two coming from Yusuf Sheata, to get back within three points at 18-15. Later tied at 22-22, Patton hit a three-pointer to put the Tritons back in front for the rest of the half. UCSD scored the final eight points of the period and led 37-28 at the intermission. 

Patton had eight points and Shoemaker totaled seven in the first half. Both were 3-for-3 from the floor, with Patton draining both of his three-point attempts.

With UC San Diego leading 46-38 in the second half, Point Loma put together a 13-0 run to take a 51-46 advantage with 10:34 remaining in the game. The Tritons responded by scoring the next nine points of the game to go back up, 55-51. With 1:29 left in the game and the score tied 64-64, Bayne hit two free throws to put the Tritons in front once again and they would not surrender the lead.

The Sea Lions got 14 points from Tanner Nelson and a game-high seven rebounds from Ziggy Satterthwaite.

UC San Diego next faces California Baptist (2-0), the 14th-ranked team in the country, on Nov. 18 in Riverside. It will be the fourth-straight PacWest Conference opponent for the Tritons.
