SAN FRANCISCO - A trio of University of California San Diego women's soccer stars were selected Wednesday morning to Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-West Region teams.
Redshirt sophomore Natalie Saddic (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS), who has played in both holding central midfield and center back roles this season for the Tritons, is a member of the 13-player first team as one of four defenders. She advances to the ballot for D2CCA All-America, to be announced on Nov. 29.
Senior Katie O'Laughlin (Carlsbad/Pacific Ridge School), the 2016 D2CCA West Region Player of the Year, and junior strike partner Mary Reilly (Chula Vista/Hilltop HS), were two of the four forwards on the 13-player second team.
Saddic is a first-time All-West Region choice. O'Laughlin and Reilly are both now three-time D2CCA honorees, having each made the first team in 2016 and the second team in 2015. O'Laughlin went on to earn D2CCA All-America Second Team distinction and Reilly All-America honorable mention a season ago.
Saddic has anchored a unit ranked second in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), third in the West Region and 24th in the nation with a 0.63 goals-against average. The Tritons have posted 12 shutouts. Saddic has added three goals offensively, with the first two from the penalty spot, and the most recent one a header for the game-winner with just 34 seconds left in regulation in the CCAA Tournament final back on Nov. 5 against No. 23 Sonoma State in La Jolla.
O'Laughlin and Reilly share the team lead at eight goals apiece, including three game-winners each, while O'Laughlin is again atop the Tritons' points chart at 20 thanks to four assists to Reilly's three. They are 1-2 in the CCAA in shots taken, with Reilly leading the league (79) for a third successive year, and O'Laughlin at 75.
Saddic and O'Laughlin have started all 20 matches this season for UCSD, with Reilly starting all 19 she has played in, missing only the CCAA Tournament semifinal on Nov. 3 due to a slight injury.
Third-ranked and top-seeded UC San Diego (16-2-2) hosts seventh-ranked and second-seeded defending national champion Western Washington (18-1) in the West Region final this Friday night, Nov. 17. Kickoff at Triton Soccer Stadium on North Campus in La Jolla is slated for 7 p.m., after the South Central Region final is contested at 4 p.m. between UC-Colorado Springs and Colorado School of Mines. The first 500 UCSD students will be admitted free of charge. Both games can be viewed in high definition, for free, on UCSDtritons.tv.
The Tritons are an unbeaten 13-0-2 over their last 15 and a perfect 12-0 at home, having won 18 consecutive matches in La Jolla dating back to Sept. 11, 2016. The Vikings are winners of 23 straight road contests, and edged UCSD 2-1 in overtime in last year's West Region final in Golden, Colo., en route to their first national title with an undefeated 24-0-1 mark.
