UC San Diego Topples Cal State San Marcos, 81-63
SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women’s basketball team captured an 81 to 63 victory against California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State San Marcos Saturday at The Sports Center. The Tritons secured the win behind senior forward Dalayna Sampton’s 22 points and 14 rebounds.
Earning its second-straight win, UC San Diego improves to 2-0 in the CCAA and 6-2 overall. CSUSM drops to 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play.
Sampton went 9-of-15 (.60) in shooting and logged her second double-double of the season. She also tallied two blocks and a steal on the night.
The Cougars’ Stephanie Somers notched 16 points while Savanna Camp had seven rebounds.
As a team, UCSD shot 47.6 percent (30-63) while keeping CSUSM to 41.5 percent (22-53). The Cougars made seven three-pointers (7-20) while the Tritons made four, shooting 21.1 percent (4-19) from long range. UCSD held a 39-31 advantage in rebounds.
The Tritons shot 53.3 percent (8-15) in the first quarter as Sampton contributed 11 points going 5-of-6 from the field. UCSD went on an eight-point run in the frame, taking a 19-12 lead.
In the second frame, UC San Diego’s offense exploded for 24 points. Tanita went a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line, tallying seven points in the quarter. The Tritons grabbed 10 rebounds with four coming from Sampton and led 43-26 at the half.
Both teams tallied 20 points in the third frame as UCSD maintained a 17-point lead, 63-46, heading into the fourth quarter.
An eight-point run in the fourth quarter gave the Tritons their largest lead of the game, 78-58, with 2:00 minutes remaining. Junior Paige Song and Sato each had five points in the frame.
UC San Diego returns home to play its final game of 2017 at RIMAC Arena with a contest against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday, Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m.
