LA JOLLA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's and women's swimming and diving teams celebrated the start of the new year by producing a clean sweep over a trio of NCAA Division I opponents in dual-meet activity on Senior Day Tuesday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center

The UC San Diego women, ranked No. 3 in the latest NCAA Division II poll, improved their dual meet record to 4-2 with victories over San José State (3-2), 152-148, and Incarnate Word (3-3), 216.5-78.5. The No. 13 UC San Diego men (2-1) topped UIW (3-2), 151-138. The remaining head-to-head women's competition saw SJSU of the Mountain West Conference cruise over UIW, 214-77. That result gave 13th-year San José State head coach Sage Hopkins dual-meet win No. 100 for his career (100-36-1), becoming that program's first to achieve the milestone.

UC San Diego's result against San José State on the women's side marked its first dual-meet triumph over the Spartans. The teams faced off in La Jolla in four straight seasons, also in early January, between 2013-16. The Tritons also placed behind SJSU in a pair of invitational-style meets at home last Jan. 2-3.

The UC San Diego men turned in the top mark in six of the 14 swimming events contested on the day, including the 200-yard medley relay to begin the meet, and the 200 freestyle relay to end it. Individual victories were provided by fourth-year senior Kevin Wylder in the 100 butterfly (49.96) and sophomore Edgar Chin in the 100 breaststroke (56.81), both in their 2017-18 season debuts. The remaining two first-place finishes came from sophomore Tin Huynh (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) in the 50 free (21.52) and junior Garrett Tse in the 200 breast (2:07.37).

On the women's side, sophomore Kaitlyn Ritchey swept the distance races over both opponents, touching first in the grueling 1650 (17:31.35) early on, and later the 500 (5:08.48). Second-year captain Haley Murphy was fastest in the 100 free (52.60), with fellow fourth-year senior Angie Phetbenjakul best in the 100 breast (1:04.06). Remaining first-place finishes came from sophomore Alayna Gocke in the 200 free (1:53.55), freshmen Lindsay Clark (2:07.09) and Rachel Taylor (2:18.11) in the 200 fly and 200 breast, respectively, and junior Lindsey Miller in the 400 individual medley (4:31.08). The Triton women totaled eight wins over the 16 events.

Murphy anchored the Tritons' fastest 200 medley relay, second in 1:45.94, after sophomore Elee Wong, Phetbenjakul and Clark. She also led off the second-place 200 free relay, combining with Gocke, sophomore Amanda Rios and Phetbenjakul for a mark of 1:37.35, and was third in the 200 free (1:53.74).

It was that final relay, and Phetbenjakul's anchor leg of 23.91, that won the meet for UC San Diego over San José State. The matchup would have ended tied at 150 had the Spartans taken the top two spots in that final race. Phetbenjakul hit the water with the Tritons trailing by .27 seconds for second place, and overtook freshman SJSU anchor Adie Collard (24.67), with the home quartet edging out the visitors by .49 seconds, 1:37.35 to 1:37.84, to close them out.

Sophomore Sawyer Farmer anchored the first-place men's 200 medley relay in 1:33.36 behind freshman Tyler James, Chin and Wylder. Senior co-captain Austin Takeda led off the top 200 free relay, which timed 1:23.87, ahead of sophomore Chris Hargrove (Santee/West Hills HS), Farmer and senior Justin Lee.

Junior diver Delainey Carlin (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) placed third on the three-meter springboard with a career-best score of 250.30. Senior Trevor Jackson (Ramona/Ramona HS), UCSD's lone male diver, was second from one meter (244.75) and third from three (247.05) in his last home appearance.

Ritchey's mile, Gocke's 200, Phetbenjakul's 100 breast and Taylor's 200 breast were NCAA consideration qualifiers, but not season bests.

Sixteen Triton seniors were recognized prior to the start in Jackson, Lee, Murphy, Phetbenjakul, Takeda, Wylder, Reilly Boyt, Kevin Fink, Holly Fosmire, Haley Hamza, Morgan King, Samuel Lee, Alex Rodman (Coronado/Coronado HS), Stephanie Sin, Derek Tanizaki-Hudson and Julia Toronczak (San Diego/West Hills HS).

Ritchey paced a 1-2-3 finish in the 1650, trailed by junior Reagan Eickert (17:41.44) and Hamza (17:57.50), as did Clark in the 200 fly before junior Emily Lambert (2:08.66) and freshman Riley Crow (2:09.36). Toronczak was second in the 200 back (2:03.42).

Huynh provided a 1-2-3 men's effort in the 50 with Justin Lee (21.95) and Hargrove (21.97), and moments later, a runner-up placement in the 100 (47.60). Wylder was second in the 200 fly (1:55.42), and Chin in the 200 breast (2:10.00). Wylder, Samuel Lee (51.95) and junior Will Knox (52.29) went 1-2-3 in the 100 fly.

Kyrylo Shvets, an Incarnate Word senior from Kharkiv, Ukraine, broke the pool record in the men's mile by timing 16:03.04, getting under former Triton captain Paul Li's 16:06.23 from Jan. 11, 2013.

Despite Tuesday marking Senior Day, the UC San Diego women still participate in one final bit of home activity right back at Canyonview Aquatic Center on Wednesday, Jan. 3. The Tritons will again play host to the San José State Spartans, this time in a straight dual showdown, with the first event slated once more for a 2 p.m. start. Admission is free on East Campus in La Jolla.
