UC San Diego Tops Stanislaus State, Wins Seventh Straight
Release: Sunday 12/31/2017

TURLOCK, Calif. - Joleen Yang scored 20 points and the University of California San Diego women's basketball team cruised to a 79-52 victory over California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponent Stanislaus State Sunday afternoon at Ed & Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena.

With its seventh consecutive win, UC San Diego moved to 11-2 overall and 7-0 in the CCAA. The Tritons remain first in the conference standings with their perfect CCAA record. The Warriors fell to 6-8 on the season and 3-5 in league action.

"I was very excited about our win tonight," said UCSD head coach Heidi VanDerveer. "We played with a lot of energy and effort and executed well against a very athletic Stanislaus team. I thought we shared the ball well and had players play to their strengths and make each other look good, and that was the key for us to win. We had some good defensive stops and overall I was very pleased."

Yang's 20 points were a game high and season best. The junior guard went 7-for-12 from the field, hitting a career-high six three-pointers on 10 tries. Sophomore Mikayla Williams and junior Marcella Hughes each tallied 15 points while senior Dalayna Sampton had 11 and grabbed a career-best five steals to lead all players. Senior Taylor Tanita dished out nine assists and notched four boards.

UCSD made 11 three-pointers, shooting 47.8 percent (11-23) from behind the arc and 50 percent (28-56) overall. The Tritons went 12-for-15 (.800) from the free throw line and corralled 30 rebounds. UCSD held Stan State to 38.8 percent (19-49) shooting and capitalized on the Warriors' sloppy ball handling, scoring 23 points off turnovers.

Stan State's Caitlin Keding netted 11 points while Zahria Hendrix and Lizzy Alexander each tallied 10. Erika Larsen led the Warriors with eight boards.

UCSD led almost the entire game and had a 28-point advantage in the fourth quarter. Hughes hit a three-pointer with 2:20 left in the first quarter that gave the Tritons a double-digit lead they would not relinquish.

Yang made two three-pointers in the second quarter that gave UCSD an 18-point advantage heading into the locker rooms. Stan State outscored the Tritons 23-21 in the third quarter, but the visitors held the Warriors to only eight points in the fourth frame to secure their seventh straight win.

UCSD's win streak dates back to Nov. 30.

The Tritons will open 2018 at RIMAC Arena on Friday, Jan. 5, at 5:30 p.m. against Humboldt State. The game will serve as a big showdown for CCAA supremacy as the Jacks, also winners of seven straight, are second in the standings at 8-5 overall and 7-1 in league play.
