BIG (WEST) NEWS FOR UC SAN DIEGO ATHLETICS

On Nov. 27, 2017, UC San Diego was officially invited to become a member of the NCAA Division I Big West Conference. The Tritons begin a four-year reclassification period starting in the fall of 2020 and will play a full Big West schedule that season. During the tranisition, UCSD will be eligible for National Collegiate Championships in men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo, and men's and women's fencing. For the 2024-25 academic year, all sports will be eligible to compete in Big West and NCAA Division I Championships. Read the full press release here.

OSHITA IS THE CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Christian Oshita was named the first CCAA Men's Basketball Player of the Week for 2018 on Jan. 2 after helping UC San Diego to a pair of key league victories. He averaged 19.5 points and 6.0 rebounds and netted seven three-pointers, all team-bests. He shot .536 overall and .500 from behind the arc. In a 71-60 home victory against San Francisco State, Oshita totaled a game-high 19 points with five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Two days later on the road at Stanislaus State, he produced a game-high 20 points to go along with a team-best seven rebounds as the Tritons defeated the Warriors by a score of 70-58. Oshita made four of his seven three-point attempts in the game. The wins vaulted UCSD from sixth to fourth in the league standings. It is the first career CCAA Player of the Week award for Oshita. He is the second Triton to win the accolade this season as Christian Bayne earned the honor on Nov. 28.

ANOTHER HONOR FOR OSHITA
Christian Oshita was recently named a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Month for December. He averaged 18.0 points and 7.3 rebounds, both team-highs, while shooting .476 (39-82) overall and .375 (15-40) from behind the three-point line to help lead UC San Diego to a 4-2 conference record in December. He hit double-figure point totals in all six games and netted multiple three-pointers in five contests. Oshita totaled 15 assists and seven steals over the month. In a win at Cal State Dominguez Hills, he recorded his second double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

WAIT FOR IT
Christian Bayne has been coming up huge in the second half. In 10 of 13 contests, he's scored more than half of his points in the second stanza and overtime. Overall this season, he's produced 136 of his 204 points, 67 percent, in the second half or later. Just once has he scored more than half of his points in the first half, netting 11 of 13 in the opening frame at Stanislaus State on Dec. 31. BAYNE DRAIN
Christian Bayne has drained 63 of his 68 free throw attempts, 92.6 percent. That percentage is tops among all CCAA players and ranks 13th in the country. Over a five-game span, he went a perfect 27-for-27, which included a 13-for-13 performance at Western Washington on Nov. 24. His 63 free throws made are the 47th-most by any player in the country.

BAYNE NAMED CCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Christian Bayne was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Player of the Week on Nov. 28. Over two wins at Western Washington’s Chuck Randall Classic, Bayne led UC San Diego in scoring (17.5 points/game), rebounding (6.5/game), and free throw percentage (1.000). In an 81-73 victory against the host, the junior guard totaled a season-high 19 points to go along with a team- and season-high seven rebounds as well as a game- and season-high four assists. Bayne went a perfect 13-for-13 from the free throw line vs. the Vikings. Against Alaska, he shot .700 (7-10) and pulled down a game-high six rebounds. The Tritons defeated the Nanooks by a score of 80-56. For the week, Bayne totaled 35 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists while shooting .588 (10-17).

TRITON TRIO EARNS TOURNEY ACCOLADES IN WASHINGTON
At Western Washington's Chuck Randall Classic, Christian Oshita was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after averaging 17.0 points per game and going 13-for-22, 59.1 percent, from the field over a pair of UC San Diego victories. Christian Bayne and Scott Everman were also named to the all-tournament team.

UC SAN DIEGO DROPS EXHIBITION AT SAN DIEGO STATE
Despite hitting 15 three-pointers, UC San Diego was defeated, 98-79, by San Diego State in an exhibition game on Nov. 2 at Viejas Arena. The Tritons shot 43.3 percent (29-67) overall and 44.1 percent (15-34) from behind the three-point line. Both teams finished with 33 rebounds, with UCSD holding a 14-8 advantage on the offensive glass. Four Tritons hit double-figure point totals, including Christian Oshita, who finished with a game-high 16. Scott Everman and Eric Patton netted 14 points apiece, with Everman going 4-for-4 from long range and Patton hauling in a game co-high eight rebounds. Christian Bayne and George Buaku each dished out four assists and Buaku added seven boards. The Aztecs, which shot 60.7 percent (34-56) for the game, got 46 of their points in the paint with 13 coming off the fast break. SDSU was 23-30 from the free throw line, while UC San Diego was 6-9. TRITONS COMING OFF HISTORIC SEASON
UC San Diego's 2016-17 season was the finest in program history as the Tritons set records for overall wins (27) as well as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victories (17). The team won its first-ever CCAA regular season title and added a second banner by winning the league's tournament for a second time. For the second-straight season, top-seeded UCSD advanced to the NCAA West Region championship game, serving as the regional host for the first time. A 12-game win streak was also a team first and the Tritons were ranked as high as 11th in the country, finishing their campaign at No. 19. Senior guard Adam Klie was named the CCAA Player of the Year and Eric Olen was tabbed the CCAA Coach of the Year. In addition to Klie, sophomore center Chris Hansen was an All-CCAA First Team selection, while sophomore swingman Christian Oshita was named to the league's second team.

HANSEN TO MISS 2017-18 SEASON
Junior center Chris Hansen will sit out the team's 2017-18 campaign following off-season shoulder surgery. In 2016-17, Hansen averaged 12.5 points and 6.0 rebounds, both numbers ranking second on the roster. His .505 field goal percentage and 22 blocks led the Tritons. In the CCAA, he ranked first in free throw percentage (.960), third in field goal percentage (.529), 11th in blocks (0.8), 13th in scoring (13.3), and 16th in rebounding (5.8). Hansen was a First Team All-CCAA selection.

ADAM 13
Adam Klie graduated in 2017 as UC San Diego's Division II leader in career points (1,524), rebounds (625), field goals made (561), field goals attempted (1,084), free throws attempted (527), games played (118), and minutes played (3,510). The guard, who wore No. 13, was just the second Triton during the team's DII era to total 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds. This past season, Klie earned a slew of awards, including CCAA Player of the Year, NABC and D2CCA West Region First Team, CoSIDA Academic All-America of the Year, and CCAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year accolades. The three-time All-CCAA selection and 2014 CCAA Freshman of the Year graduated with a 4.0 GPA as a Bioengineering major. HEAD COACH ERIC OLEN
Following nine seasons as an assistant coach with the UC San Diego men's basketball team, Eric Olen was named the program's 12th head coach on Oct. 1, 2013. Over his four seasons at the helm, Olen has led the Tritons to an 82-36 (.695) overall record with a 57-27 (.679) mark in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. Olen joined the UC San Diego coaching staff as a second assistant for the 2004-05 season. Just one year later, he was promoted to first assistant. As a player at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala., Olen helped the Badgers to three-straight appearances in the NAIA National Tournament, including trips to the NAIA Elite Eight in 2000 and 2001.
