SOMERS, Wis. - University of California San Diego senior captain Haley Murphy was honored Tuesday as the CollegeSwimming Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) Women's Swimmer of the Week for the week of Jan. 15-21.
Murphy led No. 6 UC San Diego to a dual-meet victory at No. 13 California Baptist in Riverside on Saturday afternoon, 206-94. She contributed wins in all four of her races, both relays bookending the individual sprints. Murphy began her day by providing a stellar freestyle anchor of 51.70 seconds to cap the fastest 400-yard medley relay (3:51.33), which won by over five full seconds for 11 big points. She added an individual sweep of the 50 (24.34) and 100 (52.64) freestyle sprints. The Napa native rounded out the performance as a member of the first-place 800 free relay (7:40.50), handling the third leg. Murphy helped contribute 40 points to the Tritons, who improved to 7-3 in duals.
Murphy is UC San Diego's fourth CollegeSwimming honoree for 2017-18, after junior Garrett Tse on Nov. 7 and freshmen Tenny Chong and Ciara Franke on Dec. 5. CollegeSwimming.com expanded its coverage ahead of the 2015-16 season, and the website now selects national swimmers of the week, as well as one male and one female standout for each and every conference, at all levels. Those awards are given not through nominations, but based on quality of swims, individual wins and team scores from all submitted meet results from the week in question.
The UC San Diego women complete their dual-meet season at crosstown rival University of San Diego this Saturday, Jan. 27, with the action getting underway at 12 p.m. at USD's Sports Center Pool. Admission is free. The Triton men have wrapped up their regular season and await the PCSC Championships, Feb. 14-17, in La Mirada.
