TEMPE, Ariz. - The 16th-ranked University of California San Diego women's water polo team split a pair of matches Saturday on the opening day of the Cross Conference Challenge at Arizona State, defeating No. 20 Princeton by a score of 6-4 before dropping a 7-4 decision against No. 6 Hawai'i.

In the first game, UC San Diego scored two goals in each of the first three quarters, while Princeton tallied a single goal in all four stanzas.

Down 1-0 in the first period, the Tritons tied it up when freshman Ciara Franke (San Diego/La Jolla HS) found the back of the net. Classmate Grace Pevehouse gave UCSD its first lead of the day when she scored with just one second left in the quarter.

The Tigers evened it at 2-2 just 30 seconds into the second quarter. However, the Tritons got back-to-back goals from junior Shelby Stender and freshman Taylor Onstott (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) to take a 4-2 lead into halftime and they would not trail again.

Pevehouse opened the third quarter with her second goal of the game, which came on a 5-meter penalty shot at the 6:43 mark. Princeton got one back on a power play before junior Krista Schneider rounded out UC San Diego's scoring, making it 6-3 in favor of the Tritons at the end of the third period.

Princeton's fourth-quarter score also came on a converted power play.

Sophomore Reilly Gallagher and freshman Bennett Bugelli (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) split time in goal for the Tritons, with each making four saves.

For the Tigers, Lindsey Kelleher scored twice and Marissa Webb had 10 saves.

Hawai'i scored the first two goals of the next game, but UC San Diego had it tied up mid-way through the second quarter thanks to back-to-back goals by Onstott, the first coming on a power play.

However, the Rainbow Wahine scored three-straight times and held a 5-2 advantage following three periods of play.

Both squads added two goals apiece in the fourth quarter, with UCSD's coming from Schneider and senior Kayla Fedler.

Again, keeper duties were shared between Gallagher and Bugelli. Bugelli made 11 stops, while Gallagher had six.

Elyse Lemay-Lavoie had three goals for Hawai'i and Ymane Hage made eight saves in goal.

UC San Diego, now 2-4 on the season, concludes action at the Cross Conference Challenge Sunday as it takes on No. 21 Loyola Marymount at 7 a.m. and fifth-ranked Arizona State at 10:30 a.m. Live scoring for both matches is available here.
