Tritons Go Up Against Nation's Top Squads at Northwestern Duals

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The University of California San Diego fencing team took on the country's top-ranked squads at the Northwestern Duals Saturday and Sunday at the University of Notre Dame.

The UC San Diego men recorded a 4-5 record. The Tritons earned victories against Cleveland State, Detroit Mercy, Lawrence, and Wayne State. They were defeated by No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 6 Princeton, No. 7 Penn, and North Carolina.

Senior epeeist Alex Okamoto went 14-8 over the tournament, while senior foilist David Hadler was 11-7. Hadler scored a victory against Ohio State's Max Chastanet, the 2016 NCAA National Champion.

Overall, UCSD's women were 3-8 with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson, Lawrence, and Wayne State. The team fell to No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 4 Princeton, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 7 Temple, No. 8 Northwestern, No. 9 Penn, Duke, and North Carolina.

On Saturday, the women's epee squad had an amazing run of victories, posting wins over powerhouses Notre Dame, Princeton, Ohio State, Penn, and Duke. Leading the way was freshman Emma Zmurk, who ran up a 14-3 record. Sophomore Amelia Harrison went 10-5 over the weekend.

In foil, freshman Konami Masui went 10-5.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, UC San Diego hosts the Team Invitational. The event starts at 2:45 p.m. at Main Gym on campus.
