CLAREMONT, Calif. - The University of California San Diego track and field teams officially opened their 2018 seasons Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer's Collegiate All Comers Meet at Strehle Track. The day was highlighted by senior Paul Doan (San Diego/St. Augustine HS) breaking his own school record in the 100-meter dash, as well as 10 total wins plus several other school top-10 and NCAA provisional qualifying marks by the Tritons.

Doan swept the sprints, getting under his own program record in the 100 by .01 seconds in going 10.52, fast enough for an NCAA provisional qualifying time. He added a win in the 200 as well, recording a time of 21.54.

The UCSD men’s 4x100-meter relay team of Riley SasakiJustin Hunter, Adam Winding and Doan took first in the event with a time of 41.29, the third-fastest on UCSD's all-time list. The quartet of Andrew Dirks, Kavin Hariharan, Makhai Husband and Marco Truqui finished second (43.17).

The UC San Diego women earned the top three marks in the 400-meter hurdles. Senior Meghan Fletcher was first in 1:01.32, the school’s fifth-best mark all-time as well as an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Sophomore Claudia Cox (1:03.63) and junior Kelly Strand (1:04.38) finished second and third, respectively.

Fletcher, freshman Mckenna Meaney, senior Mandy Che and sophomore Avery Schulhofer kept pace with their men’s relay counterparts, winning the women’s 4x100-meter relay with a time of 48.11.

The women also found a first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay with Che, Cox, senior Selena Friedman and Fletcher posting a winning time of 3:56.46. The Tritons went 1-2 in the event with sophomore Chelsea Challacombe, sophomore Melissa Seaman, freshman Zeinab Torabi and junior Kelly Strand placing second in 4:02.92.

The Tritons finished first in four more events, all on the women's side. Friedman narrowly won the 800-meter run (2:16.65) and senior Carly Heffernan placed first in the pole vault (10’11.75”). Junior Esther Nofodji won the discus throw (136’4”) and classmate Natalie Caraway tied for first in the high jump (5’5”).

Junior Nicholas Rack joined those who earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks with his third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (14.48). His time is the fifth-best in school history.

In the men's shot put, sophomore Devin Lecakes-Jones finished second (50’3.5”) in improving on his career best, still UCSD's 10th-best mark all-time.

The Triton men recorded several other second-place finishes on the day, including senior Matt Bowen in the triple jump (49’8.5”), senior Joshua Makieve in the hammer throw (167’3”), senior Josef Polk in the 400-meter hurdles (55.33), and freshman Evan Shimasaki in the pole vault (15’5”). In addition, the 4x400 relay squad of Husband, Winding, Hariharan and Polk was second in 3:21.53.

Bowen's performance in the triple jump earned him an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

UC San Diego returns to competition next Saturday, Feb. 24, for the Mangrum Invitational at Cal State San Marcos.
