Tritons Show No Sign of Slowing Down; Win Big Over Cal State Dominguez Hills, 90-63

UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Tritons were crowned conference champions nearly two weeks ago, but still play with the mentality of a team that has something to prove.

With the upcoming California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament on the horizon, the University of California San Diego women’s basketball team dismantled visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills, 90-63, on Thursday evening at RIMAC Arena.

Sophomore forward Mikayla Williams scored a game-high 21 points with nine rebounds, senior forward Dalayna Sampton notched her 13th double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds, sophomore guard Sydney Sharp scored nine of her 12 points in the first quarter and senior guard Taylor Tanita tallied a season-high 11 assists.

On a night senior Paige Song recorded an assist in her first minutes played since the last meeting against CSU Dominguez Hills on Dec. 19, UC San Diego (24-3, 20-1 CCAA) won for the 20th time in its last 21 games.

The Tritons have won four-straight over the Toros and matched a season-high with 90 points scored. In addition, UC San Diego outrebounded the CSU Dominguez Hills 47-33 and racked up a season-high 24 assists.

“We’ve been doing a great job of making sure our mentality stays the same,” said junior forward Shandiin Armao, who scored eight points with a career-high seven rebounds. “Every game is going to be the hardest game we’ve played from here on out, so we’ve just got to keep this mentality and keep playing like this.”

Each of the first three quarters ended with a Triton knocking down a baseline jumper before the buzzer. Williams hit from the left side to end the first and sank one from the right side to end the half. Armao kept the streak going at the end of the third quarter, making a mid-range jumper to put the Tritons ahead 63-46.

After leading by 10 at halftime, UC San Diego outscored the CSU Dominguez Hills (12-14, 10-11) by seven in the third quarter before pulling away with a 27-17 edge in the fourth.

A short jump shot by Williams off an inbound pass put the Tritons ahead by 13 early in the third quarter, and a free-throw line jumper by Sampton made it 51-38 with six minutes left in the period.

Sampton’s up-and-under move for bucket while fouled followed by Armao’s cutting layup off an assist from Tanita extended the lead to 56-42 with 2:50 to go in the third.

UC San Diego closes out the regular season on Saturday when the Tritons play host to Cal State LA on Senior Night beginning at 5:30 p.m.
