NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The University of California San Diego women’s water polo team started strong on Friday, but eventually dropped its match to No. 6 Arizona State, 9-3, in the opening day of UC Irvine’s Barbara Kalbus Invitational at Corona del Mar High School.

Senior Kayla Fedler, junior Shelby Stender and freshman Grace Pevehouse each scored a goal for UC San Diego (7-8, 1-0 WWPA), which was unable to sustain its first-half momentum in the loss. The Tritons had their two-game winning streak snapped in the process.

Fedler also recorded three steals, while freshman Taylor Onstott finished with two assists and one steal and junior Krista Schneider tallied two steals.

Sophomore goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher recorded five saves and three steals in defeat, while freshman goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli finished with three saves and a steal.

Stender’s goal put the Tritons on the scoreboard with 5:29 left in the first quarter, and a goal by Pevehouse knotted the score, 2-2, with 3:59 remaining in the period. It was the closest UC San Diego would be the rest of the game, however, as ASU (10-2) took a 4-2 lead into halftime and outscored the Tritons 5-1 in the second half.

UC San Diego continues tournament play on Saturday, as the Tritons take on No. 18 San Jose State at Corona del Mar High School beginning at 11:45 a.m.
