No. 24 UC San Diego Completes Four-Game Sweep of Cal State San Marcos
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The 24th-ranked University of California San Diego softball team used 19 runs Saturday to win twice and complete a four-game sweep of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) rival Cal State San Marcos.
Senior Kendall Baker finished 4-for-8 at the plate, scoring five runs and stealing three bases. Senior Kelsi Maday registered five RBI, while freshman Bobbi Aguirre hit a home run for the third time in four games and finished her day with three RBI. Freshman pitcher Robyn Wampler earned a win for the second consecutive day, improving her season record to 10-2.
UC San Diego (13-4, 8-4 CCAA) has now won 11 straight games against the Cougars.
Baker went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored three runs, while Maday drove in three to lift UCSD to a 12-1 win. Eight different Tritons accounted for nine total hits.
Wampler allowed just one unearned run on three hits and totaled three strikeouts in four innings of work.
Sophomore Mikaila Reyes (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) led off the second inning with a home run down the left field line. The remainder of the inning saw three costly errors by the Cougars lead to five more runs for the Tritons.
In the fourth inning, UC San Diego scored five runs and Cal State San Marcos committed three more errors, giving the Cougars six for the game.
Sara Langdon had two hits for CSUSM.
Maday’s two RBI game and an Aguirre home run led UC San Diego to a 7-5 win to complete the sweep.
Down 2-0 early, the Tritons struck for a run in the third when back-to-back-to-back singles loaded the bases with one out. Maday was then hit by a pitch, allowing freshman Michele Ota to cross the plate.
The most interesting play of the day came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Baker and sophomore Danica Kazakoff started it off with consecutive singles. Maday then sent the ball back to the pitcher, whose throw to first base careened into right field, allowing all three Tritons to come around and score. Aguirre added a fourth run in the inning with a solo home run.
Maday and Aguirre each drove in runs an inning later to make the score 7-2.
Cal State San Marcos would close the gap in the top of the seventh with three runs, but the Tritons held on for the victory.
On Friday, UCSD defeated CSUSM by scores of 5-1 and 10-2.
UC San Diego returns to action next week when the Tritons travel to Azusa Pacific for a doubleheader on Friday, March 2.
