Track and Field Men and Women Each Take First at Mangrum Invitational
SAN MARCOS, Calif. -The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams each took first place at the Mangrum Invitational hosted by Cal State San Marcos on Saturday. The men finished with 111 points, ahead of the Cougars who finished with 67 points. The women won with 144 points, with Cal State San Marcos (120) and Point Loma (117) finishing behind. Both the men and women combined to win 22 events on the day.
Sophomore Devin Lecakes-Jones (San Diego/Rancho Bernardo HS) took first in the men's shot put and improved on his own all-time mark in the event, throwing for a 52'5.25" mark on his final toss to move up from No. 10 to No. 6 in the program record book.
Senior Paul Doan (San Diego/St. Augustine HS) won the 100-meter dash with a 10.82 time and the 200 meters with a 22.00 time. Freshman Mckenna Meaney won the 200-meter dash on the women's side, posting a 25.85 time.
Sophomores Adam Winding and Makhai Husband, freshman Kavin Hariharan and sophomore Josef Polk finished with a 3:26.39 final time, winning the men's 4x400 relay. Mandy Che, fellow senior Selena Friedman, sophomore Claudia Cox and senior Meghan Fletcher won the 4x400 relay on the women's side with a 4:01.90 time.
UC San Diego took home first in the men's and women's 400-meter hurdles behind Polk (54.62) and Fletcher (1:03.06).
Junior Arik Nesbit won the men's triple jump with a 47'7" mark, while junior Tais Marinho-Gomez won the women's triple jump posting a 37'5" mark. Junior Esther Nofodji (San Diego/Hoover HS) used a 139'10" mark to win the women's discus throw.
Junior Nicholas Rack ran a 14.67 time in the 110-meter hurdles to win the event.
Che won the 400 meters running a 59.41 final time.
"We always seem to be our best in scoring meets," remarked UC San Diego men's head coach Tony Salerno. "That certainly was the case today."
"It was great to have our full team out and they looked solid across all the event areas," added women's head coach Darcy Ahner. "We are excited to roll the momentum into next week against some Big West (Conference) teams."
The men's and women's track and field teams are back in action at the All-UC Challenge in Santa Barbara next Saturday, March 3. The meet at Westmont College against UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine begins at 12 p.m.
