Swimmers Compete at Las Vegas Last Chance Invitational
LAS VEGAS - Several University of California San Diego swimming student-athletes competed Saturday at the Las Vegas Last Chance Invitational at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium.
The 10 Tritons were there in the hopes of bettering their chances for selection to the 2018 NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships in Greensboro, N.C., March 14-17. None of the UC San Diego competitors were able to improve existing marks.
First-year UC San Diego head coach David Marsh's pupils will now await the NCAA's announcement of entrants in the coming week. The unofficial list will come on Wednesday, Feb. 28, with the official unveiling following on Thursday, March 1, both around 2 p.m. PT at NCAA.com.
Four Tritons are assured of getting on the plane to North Carolina in all four of first-year head diving coach Rafaella Suarez's divers. Juniors Brooke Abrantes (San Diego/Santana HS), Delainey Carlin (Carlsbad/Carlsbad HS) and Patty Sullivan, and senior Trevor Jackson (Ramona/Ramona HS), are all repeat participants, and will all compete in the pre-qualification meet on Tuesday, March 13. It will be a third straight trip for Abrantes and Sullivan. Abrantes is the only one who has previously advanced into the main draw, having done so a year ago before earning All-America honorable mention with a 16th-place showing in the threee-meter springboard event.
On Saturday in Las Vegas, senior Stephanie Sin (5:08.31) and sophomore Alayna Gocke (5:14.65) competed in the 500-yard freestyle.
