SAN RAMON, Calif. – The 24th-ranked University of California San Diego freshman duo of Bobbi Aguirre and Robyn Wampler have been named as California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Softball Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, as the conference announced its selections Tuesday.
Aguirre batted .500 (5-for-10) with three home runs, eight RBI, and five runs scored in a four-game sweep of Cal State San Marcos. She homered in three of four games and had at least one RBI in every contest.
Aguirre opened the weekend strong, going 4-for-5 with two home runs, five RBI, and four runs scored over two games on Friday afternoon. She then went 1-for-5 with a home run, three RBI, a walk, and a run scored on Saturday to close out her impressive weekend.
The Chino Hills, Calif., native ranks first in the CCAA in RBI (19) and is tied for second in home runs (4) on the season.
Wampler pitched 11 total innings, allowing only one earned run on six hits while striking out 14 batters in two victories against the Cougars.
The Berkeley, Calif., native was stellar in Friday's series opener, fanning a career-high 11 batters and allowing just one earned run on three hits in a complete game effort. The 11 strikeouts were the most by a Triton since Camille Gaito totaled 12 against Saginaw Valley State in May of 2011.
In Saturday's first game, Wampler threw four innings, surrendering one unearned run on three hits, walking none, and striking out three.
With the two victories, Wampler improved her season record to 10-2. She ranks first in the conference in wins (10) and innings pitched (65.0) and is second in strikeouts (48).
UC San Diego (11-4, 6-4 CCAA) is back in action when it travels to Azusa Pacific for a two-game, CCAA doubleheader on Friday, March 2.
