CLAREMONT, Calif. — The No. 10 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team swept two games on the first day of the Claremont Convergence on Friday, which is co-hosted by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer.
The Tritons defeated No. 23 Cal Baptist, 12-5, to begin the day before topping Pomona-Pitzer in the night cap, 12-6.
UC San Diego (11-9, 1-0 WWPA) has now won four of its last five games and seven of its last nine.
Senior Kayla Fedler and junior Shelby Stender recorded two assists apiece, and freshman Ciara Franke tallied a team-high four steals. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli finished with seven saves and two steals.
The Tritons scored five goals in the first quarter and added four in the second to take a commanding 9-2 halftime lead before cruising to the victory.
Freshman Grace Pevehouse scored four goals while fellow freshmen Franke and Onstott recorded three goals apiece to lift the Tritons past Pomona-Pitzer.
UC San Diego led 5-4 at halftime before outscoring Pomona-Pitzer 7-2 in the second half.
The Tritons continue play at this weekend’s invitational on Saturday, as UCSD takes on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 11:40 a.m. before facing Whittier at 3:40 p.m.
