No. 23 UC San Diego will compete in the NCAA Division II Tournament beginning this Friday at noon.

Time to Dance! No. 23 Tritons Earn No. 3-Seed, Take on Seattle Pacific in West Regional on Friday


INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The No. 23 University of California San Diego women’s basketball team earned the No. 3-seed in the NCAA Divison II West Region and will face No. 6-seeded Seattle Pacific on Friday, March 9, beginning at 12 p.m.

The game will be hosted by West Region No. 1-seed Azusa Pacific and is rematch of an early-season meeting between the two teams, as the Tritons fell to the Falcons, 65-59, on Nov. 18.

It marks the 11th all-time appearance NCAA Division II postseason appearance for UC San Diego, as it qualified for the third-consecutive season. The Tritons also advanced in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.

UC San Diego’s deepest tournament run to the Final Four came in 2007.

The Tritons are 10-10 all-time in NCAA Division II Tournament postseason play. UC San Diego lost to Simon Frazer in the first round last season, 69-65, but advanced to the West Region Final in 2016 before falling to Alaska Anchorage.

Seattle Pacific finished the season 24-6 overall and won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament Championship with a victory over Montana State Billings, 71-61. SPU last made the NCAA Tournament in 2015.

Friday’s winner will take on the winner between No. 2-seed Hawaii Pacific and No. 7-seed Montana State Billings.

UC San Diego (27-4) is the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) regular-season champion and is coming off a last-second loss to Humboldt State in the CCAA Tournament Championship game on Saturday.

The Tritons have won 23 of their last 25 games and are currently ranked 23rd in the latest WBCA Top 25 Coaches Poll.

Senior forward Dalayna Sampton was named CCAA Player of the Year last week, while head coach Heidi VanDerveer received CCAA Coach of the Year honors.

Sophomore forward Mikayla Williams joined Sampton on the All-CCAA First Team, while junior Kayla Sato was named to the All-CCAA Second Team and both senior guard Taylor Tanita and junior guard Joleen Yang earned CCAA Honorable Mention.
