SAN DIEGO - University of California San Diego standout student-athletes Alex Eliopulos and Christian Bayne were announced as San Diego Hall of Champions (SDHOC) Stars of the Month for the month of February.
Eliopulos, a redshirt junior third baseman, led the then-seventh-ranked Tritons to a 9-4 overall record. He hit .426 (23-54) and slugged .870, with a .500 on-base percentage, seven home runs, three doubles, 14 runs, 23 RBI, and eight walks against just two strikeouts. He produced three games with two home runs, all Triton wins.
A junior guard, Bayne averaged a team-best 17.0 points to go along with 2.2 steals and 1.4 assists per game. He scored at least 10 points in seven games and 20-plus in four, including a career-high 28 at league rival Sonoma State. Bayne hit a three-pointer with :03 left in the second overtime, lifting UC San Diego to an 82-81 win over Stanislaus State in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Tournament quarterfinals.
Each month, the San Diego Hall of Champions honors as many as four professional, six amateur and six high school athletes as Stars of the Month for their outstanding athletic accomplishments. Stars of the Month are recognized in the San Diego Union-Tribune, via the Hall of Champions' app, social media channels and website, and at the annual Salute to the Champions awards dinner. Top-performing Stars of the Month can also earn Star of the Year accolades. Those considered are either from San Diego, or have achieved stardom for local teams.
Bayne and Eliopulos make it four Tritons named as San Diego Hall of Champions Stars of the Month for the 2018 calendar year:
