Varsity 8, Novice 8 Win at San Diego Crew Classic
SAN DIEGO - The University of California San Diego's Varsity 8 maintained its momentum from a day earlier and won the DII/DIII/Club Grand Final Sunday at the 45th San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay. It was one of two victories on the day for UC San Diego, which also saw its Novice 8 boat finish first in its final.
The Tritons' Varsity 8 crew of coxswain Juni Kim, Brooke Campbell, Tonya Khounani, Kyley Jones, Sydney McGuire, Catherine Mosher, Jane Zanteson, Alana Zaleski, and Audrey Ruttan recorded a winning time of 7:24.447 over the 2000-meter course.
UCSD came in almost three seconds in front of Grand Valley State, which took second in 7:27.100. Purdue (7:29.041) was third, Seattle Pacific (7:30.732) placed fourth, UC Davis (7:46.587) was fifth, and the University of Calgary Rowing Club (8:02.474) rounded out the field in sixth.
UC San Diego earned its spot in Sunday's Grand Final by winning its heat race with a blistering time of 7:16.042 on Saturday. That mark was almost 10 seconds faster than the winning time of the other heat.
In Sunday's Novice 8 Grand Final, the crew of coxswain Maile Heyer, Morgan Stark, Kaili Inouye, Geraldine Wambersie, Sarah Proctor, Scotlyn Macdonald, Taryn Geivet, Devin Gaetje and Larissa Morse topped the five-boat field with a time of 7:44.070. The Tritons were well in front of second-place Orange Coast College, which recorded an 8:12.299. California Lightweight (8:19.765) was third, UC Davis (8:43.716) took fourth, and UC Santa Barbara (8:52.346) was fifth.
UCSD last won two San Diego Crew Classic Grand Finals in 2014, taking victories in the Novice 8 and Varsity 4+ events.
UC San Diego had two boats entered in the Varsity 4+ final with its A crew placing second in 8:19.367 and its B crew finishing fifth in 9:09.302. The University of Calgary Rowing Club was the winner in 8:04.940.
The Open 8 was the final race of the day for the Tritons, who placed sixth of seven in 7:47.910. California took first with a time of 6:51.990.
The Novice 8, Open 8, and Varsity 4+ events were finals only with no qualifying heat races.
UC San Diego competes for the Berg Cup on March 31 in Newport Beach.
