FRESNO, Calif. — Junior Shelby Stender and freshman Ciara Franke each had a hat trick with three goals apiece, as the No. 11 University of California San Diego women’s water polo team earned a road victory over Fresno Pacific, 18-3, on Friday afternoon.
Stender added an assist and a steal while Franke finished with three steals, as 10 different Tritons scored a goal.
UC San Diego 19-10, 4-0 WWPA) has now won 10 of its last 11 games and remains unbeaten in Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) play.
Senior Kayla Fedler, sophomore Jessee Ransone, freshman Taylor Onstott and junior Chanel Schilling scored two goals apiece, junior Krista Schneider recorded a goal, two steals with a game-high three assists and sophomore goalkeeper Reilly Gallagher had six saves to earn the win.
Emily Knowles scored three goals to lead Fresno Pacific (8-14, 2-2 WWPA).
The Tritons scored six goals in the first period and added five more in the second to take a commanding 11-3 lead at halftime. Freshman goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli relieved Gallagher at intermission and pitched a shutout over the final 16 minutes.
Freshman Grace Pevehouse put UC San Diego on the scoreboard early with a goal off a Schneider assist, and Franke followed with a score less than a minute later off an assist from Pevehouse to make it 2-0.
Schneider, Ransone and Fedler followed with a goal in the first, and Franke put the exclamation point on the opening period with a goal off an assist from freshman Tera Richardson with one second left in the period.
UC San Diego wraps up its two-game road trip on Saturday, when the Tritons take on Fresno State beginning at 12 p.m.
