LA JOLLA, Calif. — University of California San Diego men’s water polo associate head coach Matt Ustaszewski will represent the United States on the Men’s and Women’s Senior National Team coaching staffs for the 2018 FINA Intercontinental Tournament in Auckland, New Zealand on April 3-8.
The FINA Intercontinental Tournament is the qualification tournament for the FINA World League. It’s the first competition for Team USA on their road to qualifying for the 2019 World Championships. He also joined the Team USA delegation for their weeklong training in Brisbane, Australia, that included exhibition matches against Australia on March 28 and March 30.
Ustaszewski will serve as the team’s performance analyst, filming all of the trainings and competitions, as well as assisting with video breakdown. The 2003 UC San Diego graduate and fifth-year associate head coach looks forward to the opportunity of representing his country at the highest levels of water polo.
“It means a lot to me to be a part of the Team USA culture and experience what the elite athletes in our nation are trying to accomplish,” said Ustaszewski.
Ustaszewski has served as head coach for the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program’s Pacific Southwest Zone since 2011. In February, Ustaszewski coached the Pacific Southwest to a national championship, representing the first time a team from the San Diego area has won an Olympic Development Program national title.
“UC San Diego has a long history of quality coaches dawning the red, white and blue at the highest levels of their respective sports and I am excited to continue that tradition,” Ustaszewski said. “I look forward to the opportunity to represent our country and take some of the current concepts of the international game back to our student-athletes at UC San Diego.”
