Tritons Soar Into Grand Finals at WIRA Championships
RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The University of California San Diego men's rowing team had three boats advance to the Grand Final during Day 1 of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma near Sacramento on Saturday.
UC San Diego's Varsity 8+ crew soared into the Grand Final by placing first in Heat 3. The Tritons crossed the finish line in 6-minutes, 3.42-seconds, ahead of second-place University of San Diego (6:07.19) and third-place Washington State (6:11.31). Sunday's Grand Final will begin at 8:40 a.m.
The Tritons' Varsity 2 crew experienced similar success on Saturday, winning its heat with a time of 6:16.65. UC San Diego won by nearly five full seconds, finishing in front of UC Santa Barbara (6:21.20), and will compete in the final set for Sunday at 9:20 a.m.
In addition, the Novice 4+ crew dominated its semifinal heat at 7:24.27 to top USD (7:37.84), UCLA (7:38.05) and USC (7:52.17), with the finals scheduled to begin at noon on Sunday.
