Varsity 8 Wins, Varsity 4 Second at Dad Vail Regatta
PHILADELPHIA - A dominating win by the University of California San Diego Varsity 8 highlighted the final day of action at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday on the Schuylkill River outside of Philadelphia.
UC San Diego's V8, which led wire-to-wire, recorded a time of 6:26.729 for the open water victory. The Tritons were more than six seconds faster than second-place Mercyhurst, which finished in 6:32.858. Barry (6:34.537) was third, Seattle Pacific (6:36.686) placed fourth, Jefferson (6:41.041) came in fifth, and West Region rival Humboldt State (6:45.486) rounded out the final field in sixth.
With the victory, UC San Diego won the Henry Backe Trophy.
In the Varsity 4 race, the Tritons took second, crossing the finish line in 7:26.654, just over two seconds behind Barry, which won in 7:24.096. Merrimack (7:28.316) was third, Jefferson (7:34.744) was fourth, Rollins (7:38.190) placed fifth, and Humboldt State (7:45.225) finished sixth.
Both of UC San Diego's crews won their heat races Friday.
In the most recent national rankings, Barry is fourth, UC San Diego is fifth, Humboldt State is sixth, Seattle Pacific is seventh, and Jefferson is eighth. Mercyhurst and Nova Southeastern are receiving votes.
The qualifiers for the NCAA Division II Championship will be announced on Monday, May 14 at 2 p.m. PT via a selection show at NCAA.com. Each of the three NCAA Rowing regions qualifies a team consisting of a Varsity 8 and a Varsity 4. In addition, one at-large team (Varsity 8 and Varsity 4) as well as two at-large Varsity 8 crews will be chosen, making for a six-boat Varsity 8 field and four-boat Varsity 4 field.
The NCAA Championship will be held May 25-27 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
