LOS ANGELES - University of California San Diego junior Esther Nofodji (San Diego/Hoover HS) improved on her NCAA provisional qualifier mark in the discus on Saturday, with a throw of 152-feet, 5-inches (46.46-meters) at the Oxy Invite held at Occidental College.
Saturday's meet was only for athletes with provisional or automatic qualifiers for the upcoming NCAA Championships, and served as either one final tune-up, or a last chance to improve marks. The national championships will be held May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C.
Nofodji's previous provisional-qualifying mark was 152'3", as the local product finished first in Saturday's meet with a throw more than 30 feet farther than the second-place finisher.
Freshman Evan Shimasaki's second-place finish in the pole vault saw him clearing 15'11", surpassing his previous provisional-qualifying mark of 15'9". Meanwhile, senior Cole Mears took first place by a landslide in the javelin, even though his toss of 170'10" wasn't anywhere near his California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) championship throw of 200'11".
Junior Natalie Caraway took fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 37'8.75", junior Kelly Strand (1:01.76) and senior Meghan Fletcher (1:02.14) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 400 hurdles, and junior Nicholas Rack placed fifth in the 110 hurdles (14.46).
Qualifiers for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 15, at 3 p.m. PT. You can view the press release here.
