UC San Diego has 13 Earn USTFCCCA All-West Region Honors

NEW ORLEANS — The University of California San Diego men's and women's track and field teams had a total of 13 student-athletes earn U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-West Region honors, the association recently announced.

The Triton men had nine athletes earn accolades, as senior Paul Doan was recognized in three separate events (100, 200, 4x100-meter relay), while redshirt junior Matt Bowen received the honor in two events (long jump, triple jump).

Other men's All-West Region honorees include senior Luis Carson (high jump), senior Justin Hunter (4x100 relay), junior Arik Nesbit (triple jump), junior Nicholas Rack (110 hurdles), freshman Riley Sasaki (4x100 relay), freshman Evan Shimasaki (pole vault) and sophomore Adam Winding (4x100 relay).

On the women's side, junior Natalie Caraway (triple jump), sophomore Chelsea Challacombe (high jump), redshirt junior Tais Marinho-Gomez (triple jump) and junior Esther Nofodji (discus) were each named All-West Region.

Doan took first at the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championships in both the 100 and 200 en route to receiving the High Point Award as well as Track Athlete of the Meet honors. He Also set UC San Diego program records this season in both the 100 (10.39-seconds) and 200 (21.10). In addition, Doan is part of the Tritons' 4x100 relay team along with Hunter, Sasaki and Winding which placed second at the conference championships with a time of 40.87.

Bowen took home Field Athlete of the Meet honors at the CCAA Championships after placing first in both the long jump (24-feet 9-inches) and triple jump (51'4.25"). Meanwhile, Nesbit earned second in the triple jump (50'), Carson placed fourth in the high jump (6'7") and Shimasaki finished fourth in the pole vault (15'5").

Caraway won the high jump at the CCAA Championships (5'6") with Challacombe finishing second overall (5'6"). Marinho-Gomez earned first place in the triple jump (40'1.50") and Nofodji took third in the discus (148'0.3"). 

Six Tritons have qualified for the upcoming NCAA Championships, including Bowen, Doan, Rack, Caraway, Marinho-Gomez and senior Meghan Fletcher (400 hurdles). The National meet will be held May 24-26 in Charlotte, N.C.
