Weather Forces Significant Change to Start Time of No. 22 UC San Diego's Opener in Cary; Moved to Sunday Morning
CARY, N.C. - With severe weather feared to knock out all of Monday's action at the 2018 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship, the national committee decided late Saturday to pull both of Monday's games into Sunday, meaning a significant change to No. 22 University of California San Diego's opener.
The third-seeded Tritons (42-15) will now play sixth-seeded, 26th-ranked Texas A&M Kingsville (41-15) at 7 a.m. PT (10 a.m. ET) Sunday at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, not 12 p.m. PT. Second-seeded Columbus State then takes on No. 7 seed Mercyhurst at 10 a.m. PT. The winners and losers of those games are still scheduled to meet on Tuesday, May 29.
Saturday's first day of action saw fifth seed Augustana pull a slight upset of No. 4 seed Southern New Hampshire, 5-2, with top-seeded Florida Southern defeating No. 8 seed Southern Indiana in a game that finished right around midnight, 5-3. Florida Southern and Augustana will now turn right back around and play in the winner's bracket on Sunday at 4 p.m. PT, instead of Monday night. Southern New Hampshire and Southern Indiana contest the event's first elimination tilt at 1 p.m. PT Sunday.
Senior right-hander Mitch Hickey (6-3, 3.84 ERA) gets the start on the mound for UC San Diego on Sunday. All games in Cary can be viewed, for free, at NCAA.com. Live stats for the Tritons' opener can be accessed by clicking here.
