LA JOLLA, Calif. — The University of California San Diego men's rowing team earned an invitation to the 2018 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championships and will have three crews begin action Friday.

UC San Diego will field Varsity 8, Second Varsity 8, and Third Varsity 8 boats in Princeton, N.J. The Tritons also qualified for the IRA National Championships in 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2017.

A total of 24 institutions will be represented at the 2018 championships. The men's heavyweight division has a full field of 24 crews in the Varsity Eight, with 22 in the Second Varsity Eight, while the Third Varsity Eight has 19 entries.

The Tritons' Varsity 8 gets things started on Friday at 8:10 a.m. in Heat 2 against Yale, Northeastern, Stanford, George Washington, and Oregon State. The Second Varsity 8 follows at 9:20 a.m. in Heat 3 against Cal, Northeastern, Cornell, George Washington, and Florida Institute of Technology. UC San Diego's Third Varsity 8 boat hits the water at 10 a.m. in Heat 3 against California, Boston University, Brown, and George Washington.

Repechages will be held Friday afternoon with semifinals and finals on Saturday.

Yale is the reigning Varsity 8 national champion, one year after California broke Washington's five-year run in 2016. Cornell has won the V8 title 25 times and is followed by Washington (18), California (18), Navy (12), Pennsylvania (9), Wisconsin (8), Brown (7), Syracuse (6), Columbia (4), Harvard (3), Princeton (3), Northeastern (2), and Dartmouth (1).

Washington won the Second Varsity 8 and Third Varsity 8 national championship in 2017.

In their most recent outing, the Tritons swept first place in all four races at the Western Sprints on Lake Natoma to solidify their invite to the IRA regatta. All races at the IRA Championships can be followed with live video here.
