Kirk Kumbier was named an assistant coach with the University of California San Diego men's and women's swimming and diving programs in July of 2018. The 2018-19 season is his first on the Canyonview Aquatic Center deck.
At UC San Diego, Kumbier will assist with on-deck coaching, recruiting, swim clinics and summer camps.
Kumbier changes coasts from Meadville, Pa., where he had been at Allegheny College since 2011. He began there as an assistant, before becoming the interim head coach for the 2013-14 campaign, and then subsequently being named to the permanent post. The Gators compete at the NCAA Division III level in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC).
Kumbier guided nine of his Allegheny Gators to 14 school-record swims, with seven producing NCAA consideration qualifiers in 10 events. In his five seasons after taking charge, Kumbier oversaw upwards of 660 personal bests. In the classroom, Kumbier's student-athletes earned College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America Team recognition in 10 of the last 11 semesters on the women's side going back to the spring of 2013, and eight on the men's.
Kumbier swam for Division III power Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, aiding the Lords to three straight national titles in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He completed his undergraduate degree there in mathematics in 2011, and earned his Master of Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo., in 2016.
Alongside his collegiate coaching, Kumbier worked numerous camps and clinics between 2008-18, at swimming hotbeds such as the University of Michigan, University of Southern California, University of Georgia, and his alma mater, Kenyon.
