UC San Diego Announces Women's Soccer Leadership Changes
Release: Thursday 08/09/2018
by UCSD

LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego today announced women’s soccer head coach, Brian McManus, has resigned his position, effective immediately, and intends to retire from the university. The decision follows an internal investigation conducted by the university that confirmed McManus violated department policy which includes possible violations of NCAA regulations over a several year period.

In addition to the announcement of McManus’s departure, the university indicated it has taken disciplinary action against assistant coaches Kristin Jones and Trent Painter, who were confirmed to have had knowledge of and failed to report the violations. To improve oversight of the program, there will be enhanced responsibilities for the women’s soccer sport supervisor.  Wendy Taylor May, UC San Diego’s Deputy Athletic Director, will take on that role.

Jones and Painter will remain with the program and will lead the team during the upcoming 2018 season while the university continues its investigation and the athletic department conducts a search for a permanent head coach. The university’s athletic department plans to hire an additional assistant coach to assist with team operations and on-field coaching.

“The University of California San Diego is committed to the highest standards of integrity and accountability throughout the institution, including in our athletic department,” said Earl Edwards, UC San Diego Director of Athletics. “We take very seriously our obligations to abide by NCAA rules and to do what we believe is best for our student-athletes. We are confident that the actions we have taken are in the best interests of our student-athletes and program as we prepare for the upcoming season.”

The University promptly notified the NCAA after potential violations were confirmed, which included providing student-athletes with impermissible benefits in the form of small amounts of money. The University will continue to work cooperatively with the NCAA in its review process during the coming months.

The University also intends to take proactive steps to implement additional measures that ensure its athletics department operates within UC San Diego’s high standards and expectations.

“We appreciate that our student-athletes and certain members of our athletic department staff followed the proper protocol in reporting this behavior, and we encourage all our student-athletes, coaches and staff to speak up if they have concerns or are aware of improper conduct,” said Edwards. “It is through these mechanisms that we can protect and maintain the integrity that is core to everything we do here at the University.”
