DUPONT, Wash. - Hayden Hui snagged his second top-15 finish of the week while the University of California San Diego golf team placed 10th Saturday as the Saint Martin's Invitational concluded at The Home Course in Washington State.
Hui tied for 14th in the 96-player field. On Saturday, the junior carded a 74 (+2) in the third and final round to go along with a pair of 73s (+1) on Friday for a three-round total of 220 (+4). Hui moved up seven slots in the standings as he was tied for 21st following the first two rounds.
Earlier in the week, Hui tied for 10th at the season-opening Sonoma State Invitational at Foxtail.
UC San Diego finished with an 896 (+32) after shooting rounds of 298, 296, and 302. The Tritons were 10th at the end of the day Friday as well.
Joining Hui in the team scoring was junior Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (76-76-73--225), who tied for 33rd, junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (76-75-76--227), who tied for 42nd, junior Jacob Johnson (76-72-83--231), who tied for 62nd, and freshman Jared Gross (73-82-79--234), who tied for 75th. Playing as an individual, freshman Ethan Chen (73-78-73--224) tied for 29th.
Western Washington ran away with the team championship, posting an 855 (-9), 17 strokes in front of its nearest competitor. The Vikings recorded rounds of 284, 283, and 288 to finish as the lone team under par. Simon Fraser (872, +8) was second and Stanislaus State (876, +12) placed third in the 18-team field.
Kobie Lockwood of Stanislaus State was the individual medalist, totaling a 208 (-8) with rounds of 65, 70, and 73. WWU's Cody Roth and Chase Carlson of Colorado Christian tied for second, each with a 211 (-5).
Nine golfers finished under par on the par-72, 6,970-yard Home Course layout.
UC San Diego wastes no time playing in its third tournament of the season as it competes at the Western Washington Invitational at Bellingham Golf & Country Club Monday and Tuesday.
