UC San Diego Defeated in Four Sets at Fifth-Ranked Cal State San Bernardino
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The University of California San Diego women's volleyball team was defeated in four sets at fifth-ranked Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night.
Scores of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) match at Coussoulis Arena went 25-23, 24-26, 25-20, and 25-20.
UC San Diego fell to 5-6 overall and 1-4 in the CCAA. Cal State San Bernardino won its ninth-straight match to improve to 13-1 and remain perfect in the conference at 6-0.
The tightly-contested match featured 30 tie scores as both teams put up similar numbers almost across the board. The Coyotes were more efficient on the attack, however, posting a .226 (58-22-159) attack percentage compared to the Tritons' .194 (50-22-144).
Junior middle blocker Jessica Rieble had yet another strong match for UC San Diego with a team-best 18.5 points on 15 kills and six blocks (one solo). She hit .394 (15-2-33) and also added four digs.
Sophomore outside hitter Gina Cortesi collected her sixth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 11 digs. She has notched a double-double in four-straight matches. Fellow outside hitter Sydney Tekstra also had 14 points on 12 kills and two blocks, while junior outside Cindy Tran finished with 11.5 points on six kills, four service aces, and two blocks (one solo). Tran also contributed six assists and six digs. Freshman setter Maria Mayhew had 40 assists and freshman libero Susanna Limb amassed a team-high 12 digs.
The Coyotes got a match-high 21 points from Alexis Cardoza, who had 20 kills and 11 digs. Asia Clarke recorded a match-high with 13 digs.
It was the first nationally-ranked team that the Tritons had faced this season.
UC San Diego hosts undefeated and 17th-ranked Cal State LA (12-0, 4-0) on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. It will be the first athletic event inside a newly-renovated RIMAC Arena.
