Tritons Set Goals for Practices, Prepare for First MPSF Season
Release: Monday 09/24/2018

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The University of California San Diego men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams have begun preparation for the 2018-19 season. The squads returned to action in mid-September, spending many of their days in the pool, at the beach and in the gym ever since.

Their busy schedule features morning and afternoon practices, weight training and conditioning sessions. UC San Diego’s preseason workouts will last through September and the start of the October, leading up to the season-opening Trojan Invite at USC on Oct. 5-6.

Head Coach David Marsh, who is entering his second year with UC San Diego, has been pleased with the efforts of the Tritons at their practices. He feels that the team is excited to pursue three main goals as they prepare for the upcoming season.

“Team unity and team identity is goal number one,” Marsh said. “We’ve booked the energy bus as a team and have used that to set the stage for the fall in the most positive way.”

For their second objective, the Tritons go back to the basics.

“We are learning sound fundamentals in terms of stroke technique,” Marsh added. “We will be developing and learning and relearning skills which will make a huge difference.”

In addition to team unity and sound fundamentals, physical conditioning is the team’s final goal for their practices.

“We have athletes that come back in a variety of readiness,” Marsh noted. “Some are ready to go from the start and some are not, so we’ve been getting them all ready to go and it’s been going really well so far.”

Some of the teams’ practices have been solely for the 25 newcomers who have joined the Tritons. This class is Marsh’s first recruiting class. The newcomers are a diverse group hailing from throughout the globe, including swimmers and divers from Canada, Finland and Russia as well as across the United States.

The incoming freshmen and transfer students are not the only new faces at Canyonview Aquatic Center; Marsh brought aboard Head Diving Coach Liz Sanchez and Assistant Coach Kirk Kumbier as well. They will join Marko Djordjevic on the coaching staff, who was elevated to the position of associate head coach during the summer.

The Triton men and women are coming off of a monumental season, having won their 10th-straight Pacific Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference (PCSC) Championships titles. This season, UC San Diego will look to continue their success as they compete as part of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF).

With team unity, sound fundamentals and physical conditioning in mind, the team hopes that achieving their three goals will leave them ready to face this new challenge.
