BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Hayden Hui collected his third-consecutive top-15 finish Tuesday, placing in a tie for 13th at the Western Washington Invitational at Bellingham Golf and Country Club. The University of California San Diego tied for 15th of 20 teams.
Hui fired an outstanding 69 in the third and final round to move up 22 spots on the leaderboard. The junior finished the tournament with a 218 (+2), shooting rounds of 74 and 75 Monday.
Hui has been UC San Diego's top finisher in all three of the team's events this season. He tied for 10th at the season-opening Sonoma State Invitational and tied for 14th at the Saint Martin's Invitational.
The Tritons recorded the second-best score of the final round with a 290 (+2). Combined with Monday's rounds of 306 and 305, they finished with a 901 (+37).
"The team played well today," said UC San Diego head coach Jim Ragan. "We are much improved, but very inconsistent as these first three tournaments of the season have shown. We have a lot of things to work on."
Freshman Jared Gross tied for 16th playing as individual. He posted rounds of 70, 74, and 75 for a 219 (+3).
Freshman Ethan Chen (76-77-72--225) tied for 47th, junior Adam Navigato (Solana Beach/Torrey Pines HS) (77-76-74--227) tied for 60th, junior Justin Woo (San Diego/Torrey Pines HS) (80-77-75--232) tied for 79th, and junior Jacob Johnson (79-77-79--235) tied for 89th in the 104-player field.
Western Washington shot a 285 Tuesday to overtake Chico State for the win. The Vikings totaled an 861 (-3), two strokes ahead of the second-place Wildcats. They were the only two squads to finish under par on the par-72, 6,561-yard course.
The individual medalist was Chico State's Josh McCollum. He went 68-68-71 for a 207 (-9).
Six players finished under par.
After playing in three tournaments over the past week, UC San Diego takes the next two weeks off to prepare for the Dixie State Fall Regional Preview, which runs Oct. 15-16 in St. George, Utah.
