Mile-High Momentum: No. T-8 Tritons Knock Off Air Force, 20-12
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The No. T-8 University of California San Diego men’s water polo team continued its momentum on Friday night, defeating Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) foe Air Force, 20-12, at Cadet Natatorium.
UC San Diego (10-2, 3-0 WWPA) has won four-consecutive games overall and six-straight against Air Force. In addition, the Tritons have now scored 42 goals over the last two games, which is their highest scoring output in back-to-back wins since September 2012 (44).
Junior Noah Carniglia led all scorers with five goals, while junior Skyler Munatones finished with three goals and two assists. Sophomore Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt and redshirt sophomore Calder Hilde-Jones also recorded hat tricks on Friday with three goals apiece.
Despite playing in high elevation where the temperature outside of Cadet Natatorium dipped into the mid 40s, the Tritons came out hot from the start.
UC San Diego scored the game’s first four goals, capped off by Hilde-Jones’ goal off an assist from senior Carson Ivancovich. After Air Force finally got on the scoreboard, Carniglia scored on a penalty shot for his second goal of the period to make it 5-1.
Turnbow-Lindenstadt put an exclamation point on the stellar opening quarter, scoring a power-play goal off a pass from redshirt freshman Konstantin Karlov with one second left in the period.
The Falcons rallied to pull within three at halftime, 9-6, but Carniglia’s goal to open the second half quickly pushed the lead back to four. Redshirt sophomore Jack Ranj followed it up by scoring with just 22 seconds left in the third, putting the Tritons ahead 14-9.
UC San Diego returns to action at home next Friday, Oct. 5, as it resumes WWPA play against California Baptist beginning at 6 p.m.
