Saturday Sweep: No. 11 Tritons Top Santa Clara, No. 12 UC Irvine at MPSF Invite


STANFORD, Calif. — The University of California San Diego men’s water polo team swept two games on Saturday at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Invitational.

The No. 11-ranked Tritons defeated No. RV Santa Clara, 15-7, to begin the day, before knocking off No. 12 UC Irvine for the second time this season, 11-10.

UC San Diego (12-4, 3-1 WWPA) will now take on conference rival UC Davis in the 9th-place game on Sunday scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Game 1

Redshirt junior Kacper Langiewicz, junior Noah Carniglia and senior Captain Cole Martinez each picked up hat tricks with three goals apiece, lifting the Tritons to their 11th-straight win over the Broncos.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Jack Turner recorded nine saves in the net, while sophomore Connor Turnbow-Lindenstadt scored twice.

UC San Diego jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter and led 9-3 at halftime. Consecutive goals to start the second half by Turnbow-Lindenstadt, sophomore Jack Ranj and Langiewicz made it 12-3 with 5:49 left in the third.

Game 2

Junior Skyler Munatones finished with three goals and senior Alessandro Valania scored twice, as the Tritons knocked off UC Irvine for the second time this season.

UC San Diego jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and led 7-4 at intermission.

A score by redshirt freshman Konstantin Karlov put the Tritons ahead 10-8 with four minutes remaining, and Valania’s goal with 1:32 left made it 11-9.
