Opening Statement: No. RV Tritons Knock off Simon Fraser in Season Opener, 75-70
SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The No. RV University of California San Diego women’s basketball team got off to a strong start to the 2018-19 season, defeating Simon Fraser, 75-70, on Friday afternoon at The Sports Center on the campus of Cal State San Marcos.
UC San Diego (1-0) has now won six-straight season openers, beating Simon Fraser in the first game of each of the past two seasons. The Tritons also improved to 6-1 all-time at The Sports Center.
Friday also featured impressive debuts by a couple UC San Diego newcomers. Freshman guard Julia Macabuhay recorded 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, with junior forward Haleigh Hatfield finishing with 12 points and six rebounds in her first game in a Triton uniform.
UC San Diego forced Simon Fraser (0-1) into 16 turnovers and scored 16 points off the Clan’s miscues. The Tritons also held a 40-26 edge in points in the paint.
After trailing at halftime, 39-35, UC San Diego outscored Simon Fraser 16-9 in the third period to seize control of the game.
The Tritons return to action on Saturday when they take on No. RV Hawaii Pacific at 4 p.m., in a contest between two NCAA West Region Tournament teams from last season.
