24th-Ranked Tritons Open Season with Win
LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 24th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team tipped off its season Friday night with a victory as it defeated Simon Fraser, 69-54, in a CCAA/GNAC Challenge game at RIMAC Arena.
Junior center Chris Hansen made a triumphant return to the court, recording a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. He sank seven of his 10 shot attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers. Hansen was suited up for the first time since March of 2017 after redshirting the 2017-18 season due to shoulder surgery.
Junior guard Christian Bayne finished with 13 points and four rebounds. Senior forward Eric Patton, junior forward Scott Everman, and redshirt freshman Tyrell Roberts all finished with eight points for the Tritons. Roberts added three boards and three assists in his collegiate debut.
As a team, UC San Diego shot 49 percent from the field, making 25 of 51 shots. The Tritons were 14-for-25 (56 percent) in the second half. They scored 35 points in the paint.
UC San Diego started the game strong and went up by an 11-3 score. With 4:10 left in the opening half, Simon Fraser took its first, and only, lead at 21-19. A Bayne layup at 2:30 put the Tritons back in front and they would not trail again. SFU tied it early in the second half but UC San Diego out-scored its opponent 42-29 in the stanza. A trey by Hansen with just 37 seconds remaining in the game gave the Tritons a 17-point lead (69-52), their largest of the night.
Othniel Spence had a game-high 24 points while Wilfried Balata had 14 points, seven rebounds, and five assists for SFU.
No. 14 Western Washington defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills by a score of 84-78 in the day's first game.
The CCAA/GNAC Challenge concludes Saturday with two more games at RIMAC Arena. Cal State Dominguez Hills takes on Simon Fraser at 5:30 p.m. and UC San Diego battles Western Washington at 7:30 p.m.
