Tritons Take Second at San Diego Fall Classic

UCSD

SAN DIEGO – The University of California San Diego men’s rowing team competed at the San Diego Fall Classic on Sunday morning. It was a clear, sunny morning at Mission Bay for the team’s final action of the fall, with a large crowd on hand at the event.

The Tritons solely competed in Men’s Open 8+, one of the day’s opening races. They were pitted against crews from Arizona State, Orange Coast College, San Diego State, UCLA, and University of San Diego.

UCSD A had the Tritons’ best finish, clinching second with a time of 15:35.266. The squad was less than a second off of University of San Diego’s first place mark of 15:34.419.

Two slots behind the A team was UCSD B, who recorded a time of 15:54.385 in the regatta. UCSD C took seventh, crossing the finish line in 16:30.233.

Head Coach Zach Johnson felt that the Tritons performed well, especially given some last-minute adjustments to all three lineups and less time on the water than their opponents.

“We’re a month behind everyone in the fall, so the goal is always to win, but even more so just to have a good race,” Johnson said. “Talking to the guys, they seemed to have a pretty good race. [Seven tenths of a] seconds and a month behind, I’ll take it in a heartbeat. We’ll get there by the time we hit March racing.”

Prior to the start of the team’s official season at the UC Cup Challenge on March 2, they will travel to Newport Beach on Feb. 23 to scrimmage Orange Coast College.
