Crosstown Battle Goes to Point Loma in Overtime
SAN DIEGO - Christian Oshita and Tyrell Roberts combined for 39 points but it wasn't enough as the 24th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team suffered its first loss Wednesday, falling in overtime at crosstown rival Point Loma, 75-73.
Point Loma scored the first five points of the extra period and held a lead the rest of the way.
UC San Diego dropped to 3-1, while PLNU improved to 2-1.
The Sea Lions were dominant on the boards, out-rebounding the Tritons 49-30, which included a 20-9 advantage on the offensive glass. They were also tough inside, scoring 48 points in the paint to UC San Diego's 30.
Oshita, who was coming off a career-high 35 point-performance Monday, finished with 20 points to lead all players. Roberts was just behind with 19. Eric Patton grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, while Scott Everman had nine points, three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and a block.
UC San Diego turned the ball over just seven times and shot 44.6 percent (29-65) on the night. The Tritons made 10 of their 31 3-point attempts.
UC San Diego led by as many as 13 points in the opening half but was up by just three, 40-37, at the intermission after Daulton Hommes hit a half-court shot at the buzzer.
The score was tied four times and the lead changed six times in the second stanza. Point Loma again ended a half with a buzzer beater when Sterling Somers pulled down an offensive rebound off a missed 3-pointer and laid it in to knot the score at 64-64 and force overtime.
The Sea Lions had five players in double figures including Josh Rodriguez and Ziggy Satterthwaite, who each netted 15. Hommes finished with 14, Preston Beverly notched a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 boards, and Somers had 10 points.
UC San Diego opens its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) season on Tuesday, Nov. 20 when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at RIMAC Arena.
