19th-Ranked Tritons Win Conference Opener, 97-63 vs. Cal State San Bernardino

UC San Diego

LA JOLLA, Calif. - For the third time this season the 19th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team scored more than 90 points as it defeated Cal State San Bernardino, 97-63, in its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener Tuesday night at RIMAC Arena.

UC San Diego improved to 4-1 overall and stayed undefeated at home with a 4-0 mark. Cal State San Bernardino suffered its first loss and fell to 2-1.

Chris Hansen scored a career-high 29 points, 18 of those coming via six three-pointers, also a career-best. The center added 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the year. His point and rebound totals, which were amassed in 28 minutes of playing time, were game-highs.

The Coyotes scored the first two points of the game before a Hansen layup tied it and a layup by Christian Bayne put the Tritons ahead, where they stayed for the rest of the night. UC San Diego led by a single point, 36-35, at halftime, but outscored its opponent 61-28 in the second stanza. The Tritons made 10 of their 16 three-pointers in the second half.

UC San Diego turned the ball over just five times and totaled 21 assists and 10 steals. The Tritons scored 28 points off of 17 Coyote turnovers.

Scott Everman finished with 13 points and Bayne had 11. Tyrell Roberts had nine points, five assists, four rebounds, and four steals. Mikey Howell dished out six assists, one of which led to an alley-oop dunk by Jeremy Johnson, who caught the pass well below the rim and threw it down two-handed.

Cal State San Bernardino was led by Naradain James, who totaled 13 points and seven boards. Daytone Jennings added 12 points and eight rebounds.

The 97 points equaled a season-high as the Tritons put up that total in a win against No. 14 Western Washington on Nov. 10. They scored 96 in a victory over Saint Martin's on Nov. 12.

UC San Diego hosts Chico State on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats have yet to play a game as all of their scheduled contests have been cancelled or postponed due to the California wildfires.
