Big Second Half Propels Tritons Over Wildcats, 84-68

LA JOLLA, Calif. - The 19th-ranked University of California San Diego men's basketball team made 10 three-pointers in the second half and defeated conference rival Chico State, 84-68, Saturday night at RIMAC Arena.

UC San Diego is now 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Chico State was playing its first game of the season as the team's three previously scheduled contests were cancelled or postponed due to wildfires.

The first nine points of the second half came on back-to-back-to-back threes by UC San Diego, two from 6'7" center Chris Hansen. The 9-0 run put the Tritons up by 18 points, 43-25. By the 14:29 mark, they had netted three more, giving them six three-pointers in just over five and a half minutes of play.

In the half, UC San Diego made 10 of its 18 attempts from long range, 55.6 percent.

At the final buzzer, seven Tritons had hit at least one three-pointer and four had multiple treys in the game, including Christian Bayne and Martin Tombe, who each made three.

Hansen finished with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He was 7-for-10 from the field and had six blocks and an assist.

Bayne totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, while Gabe Hadley contributed 12 points and Tyrell Roberts had 11.

UC San Diego shot 53.7 percent (29-54) overall and 46.7 percent (14-30) from three-point land.

The Wildcats got 14 points and five rebounds from Justin Briggs. They shot 40.4 percent (23-57) for the night.

UC San Diego takes to the road next week, playing CCAA games at Cal State Monterey Bay on Nov. 29 and Cal State San Marcos on Dec. 1.
